Why Alcohol-Free Hair Care Matters (Especially for Thinning Hair)

That cool, tingly feeling from your scalp spray? It's almost always alcohol. And alcohol dries the scalp.

It feels like the product is working — a quick rush of cold, a fresh, clean sensation. But that sensation fades in seconds, and what it often leaves behind is a scalp with less moisture than it started with. For most people that's a minor trade-off. For anyone with thinning hair, it's worth paying attention to.

Here's what alcohol actually does in hair care, how to spot it on a label, and what Scalp&Care uses to deliver that fresh, cooling feel without it.

What alcohol does to your scalp and hair

Not all alcohols are the problem — more on that below — but the lightweight, fast-evaporating "drying" alcohols used in many sprays and tonics work by flashing off the skin quickly. What "alcohol-free" actually means on a label

This is where it gets confusing, because "alcohol" on an ingredients list isn't always the drying kind.

The drying alcohols — the ones worth avoiding in a leave-on scalp product — usually appear as:

• Alcohol Denat. (denatured alcohol)
• Ethanol / Alcohol
• Isopropyl Alcohol
• SD Alcohol (often with a number, e.g. SD Alcohol 40)

The "good" alcohols — which are actually moisturising and completely fine — are the fatty alcohols, and you'll often see them in conditioners:

• Cetyl Alcohol
• Stearyl Alcohol
• Cetearyl Alcohol

So "contains alcohol" on a label doesn't automatically mean a product is drying. The thing to look for is whether one of the drying alcohols sits high up the ingredients list — especially in a spray or tonic that stays on your scalp rather than rinsing off. When it does, that's your cooling sensation, and that's the moisture it's taking with it.
